Ending Gender-Based Violence Begins in Our Congregations
Gender-based violence thrives in silence. It hides behind closed doors, behind shame, and too often behind the misuse of religious teaching to counsel endurance instead of safety.
At Weslyan Heritage for Development, we believe congregations can be the safest places in a community - places where survivors are believed, supported, and connected to help, and where violence is named for what it is.
What Survivor-Centred Prevention Looks Like
In our community dialogues and trainings, we work with religious leaders and members on three practical fronts:
- Prevention - teaching that challenges the norms and excuses that make violence possible.
- Response - listening well, believing survivors, and never sending anyone back into danger.
- Referral - knowing the counselling, health, legal, and protection services available, and how to reach them quickly.
A Word to Leaders
If you lead a congregation, your voice matters more than you know. One sermon, one honest conversation, one well-handled disclosure can change - or save - a life.
WHD offers training and resources for faith leaders across Osun State. Contact us to bring a GBV-prevention dialogue to your community.
